The alienation of arrival from departure, not in terms of theory and discourse but in terms of the realpolitik of nationalism, is a striking aspect of a national movement’s overall history. But he takes no risks by favouring one or the other. He suggests that Francis ‘contrasts “ethnic” with “demonic” nations’ and ‘prefers to reserve the term “nation” for the dominant ethnic community or “ethnie” within a state’ (Smith 1983:xii, xiii). Smith views the ‘statist’ and ‘ethnicist’ approaches of parties as being coterminous with the political and cultural approaches.
