Dresslar, one of her former professors, gave her work the department's blessing, and Rowell attested to her right to use sales receipts from the publications financed by Mrs. Hearst. Printed at last in Pennsylvania, Shinn's Notes on the Development of a Child II came out in 1908 as volume 4 of Publications in Education. Milicent Shinn and Andrew Lawson, graduate student and professor, did much to develop the University as a center of graduate study in their fields. And it was their efforts, more than those of any others, that kept the University's publishing program going through the last years of the nineteenth century, relying for nearly a decade on the single appropriation of $ 1,000.
However he got the money, Lawson managed to keep the bulletin going until the turn of the century and the availability of regular funds. We might say, in retrospect, that he managedwith some help from Milicent Shinnto keep the University Press going. And a hundred years later, as another century runs to an end, the Bulletin of the Department of Geology, now called Publications in Geological Sciences, is still alive, with more than 130 volumes cataloged. A second monograph series began in 1893. Called University of California Studies and later renamed Publications in Education, its first number was Notes on the Development of a Child by Milicent Washburn Shinn, a most remarkable graduate student.
