The “Auto­maton Bakery’s” kneading machine consisted of a double-headed wooden ­cylinder, ten feet long by six feet in diameter, fixed in a horizontal frame. The inner heads were connected by two strong bars situated on opposite sides, and these bars made it possible to mix the flour, water, and sponge. One of these bars even cleaned the machine as it turned.

Drainage was to be carried by gravity, and city streets had to be raised to accomplish this. Sewers were laid on the ground, and then soil from the deepening of the river laid on top.
