The stress of the gasket when subjected to the design pressure is reduced by approximately 17% for the octagonal gasket and by about 16% for the oval gasket. 3. The contact area of the octagonal gasket is wider than that of the oval gasket, while the contact pressure occurring in the oval gasket is higher than in the octagonal gasket. 4. The mean contact pressure on the oval gasket is high by 27% in comparison with the octagonal gasket with the same size. 5. Since the contact pressure of the gasket subjected to the design pressure is reduced by 19% for the octagonal gasket and by about 9% for the oval gasket, it is supposed that the oval gasket is more advantageous from the sealing capability point of view.
In the analysis, the operating pressure and the design pressure were applied to the inner surfaces shown in Fig. 3 to investigate the changes in the contact pressure and stress levels. 17 MPa, respectively. Five load steps are used in the analysis, in which step 3 and step 5 are the steps to apply the operating pressure and the design pressure respectively while step 1 is the step to tighten the bolts. The contact occurs not only in the surfaces of the gasket in contact with the flange grooves but in the surfaces of bolts and nuts contacted with the outer surfaces of two flanges.
