Later, it is given fuller imagining with the politicians and generals of Dr. Strangelove (most clearly seen in the excised pie-fighting sequence that originally concluded the film), as well as the generals who open their weapons like children under a Christmas tree, in the final scene of the unproduced screenplay Grossing Out.

The story opens with cool, confident Dr. Frederick Eichner leaving his Beverly Hills office; with exquisite care, Southern paints a portrait of a man in complete control of his environment: “Morning, Doc,” the attendant said. ” It was a Delahaye, 235. Dr. Eichner came down the steps slowly. “This is interesting,” he said, “my experience has given me to believe that the majority didn’t care for foreign cars ... at the far bottom of the hill below was a crossroads with a traffic signal, and at a quarter way on the descent, a white stone marker showed the distance from there to the intersection of one-eighth mile.

Of all the unpublished pieces in the Archives from this period, the essay was one of the most difficult to reconstruct — the original manuscript is a confusing tangle of typescript, handwritten text, hastily scribbled marginalia, crossed-out sections and arrows indicating restructuring.
