Edwin Rolfe and Langston Hughes both illustrate the powerful political potential of traditional verse forms in the hands of gifted political poets. Rolfe develops a fairly conservative poetics and draws on traditional tropes of postromantic lyric in his poetry, but he adapts these to meet the changing historical pressures of the Popular Front, the Spanish Civil War, and postwar anticommunism.

But an examination of the poems’ bibliographic texts, of how and where they appeared, defines even more clearly the differences between these textual acts.
