There are two reasons for this. First of all, if H usserl appeals less to the history of logic at this point it is because the pure logic he envisions had not yet been developed. 14 Indeed, logic itself had made little progress beyond Aristotelian logic, for although a conception of a purely formal logic is commonplace in contemporary thought, at the time at which Husserl was writing the notion had not yet been developed. 15 Second of all, as Husserl works out the purely formal logic implied in the history of thought, he will at each step of the way legitimate the notions he develops.

This leaves no room for any model of human nature not based on the results of modern science. Science may not be interested in questions of mind or reason as part of its procedure, but it has implicitly judged the nature of mind by determining that it is to be studied by the method of natural science-that is, by the method whereby one studies any real object in the world. But this is to falsify human nature, for, as mentioned previously, humans are not like other objects in that they are observers and have a certain amount of freedom.

They maintain that one's life (livedness, lived moment) is itself unconditioned, that it cannot be placed in any context, for context or meaning is something. that follows upon the fact of one's being alive. In other words, because it does not form part of an ordered whole, one's life is a bare fact, is arational, according to the existentialists, and may be the only genuine fact there is. In their view, then, science fails to present us with facts, for that which is part of an ordered whole is no longer a genuine fact.
