Cities and Regions as Self-organizing Systems: Models of Complexity (Environmental Problems & Social Dynamics Series, Vol 1)

A transparent methodological and philosophical advent to complexity concept as utilized to city and neighborhood structures is given, including a close sequence of modelling case stories compiled over the past couple of a long time. in response to the hot complicated structures pondering, mathematical types are constructed which try and simulate the evolution of cities, towns, and areas and the advanced co-evolutionary interplay there is either among and inside of them.

Indeed, a shift in emphasis from the classical kind of state territoriality to functionally defined ‘territories’ claimed by global agencies, each with their characteristic claims and with different kinds of boundary demarcations, appears to be one key dimension in what goes on under ‘globalization’ today. The implications of these tendencies for understanding relevant political relationships and interactions, and indeed for spotting and locating the political element in the first place, are momentous but as yet appear to have been insufficiently recognized.

For present purposes, though, we may provisionally refer to globalization as comprising a set of pervasive forces – economic, political and cultural – transforming relations between collectivities and individuals across the globe, including those among ‘nation-states’. Globalization and the State 31 This is roughly in line with Stiglitz’s formulation, who describes globalization as ‘the closer integration of the countries and peoples of the world which has been brought about by the enormous reduction of costs of transportation and communication, and the breaking down of artificial barriers to the flow of goods, services, capital, knowledge, and (to a lesser extent) people across borders’ (p.

As the latter have become increasingly prevalent in recent times, it appears that the future of state forms and the role they are expected to play will strongly depend on global power configurations and the priorities they entail. By implication, studying state–society dynamics in the future is likely to start off from agendas that are vastly different from those pursued at present. 2 Globalization and the State: Reconfiguring the Connections Introduction There are many pertinent reasons today to explore the impacts globalization makes on the state, specifically the way political and institutional functions and structures associated with the state are being reoriented and reshaped through the demands and directives from contemporary global forces (Nordhaug 2002, Strange 1996, Weiss 1998).
