The I l y a M u r o m e t z (IM), Igor Sikorsky's fourengine biplane, had an enclosed cabin large enough to accommodate (on one occasion) sixteen people and a dog, and a range of more than three hundred miles. In August of 1914 there were four I M s i n the Russian inventory. In December they were sent to a base near Warsaw to conduct bombing and reconnaissance missions. Before Russia left the war, in M a r c h of 1918, some seventy IMs had been built.
