The book is dedicated to Hemingway’s fourth wife, Mary; expresses his adoration of the model of Renata, Adriana Ivancich, who designed the dust jacket; and contains a tasteless and transparent attack on his third wife, Martha Gellhorn, the only woman who ever stood up to him. ’ Since these details encouraged critics to abolish the distinction between hero and author and equate Cantwell with Ross’ image of Hemingway, they felt emboldened to expose his personal and artistic weaknesses by exposing his hero.
Mencken, by contrast, remains rather critical of Hemingway’s stylistic tricks and shadowy characters.
