The first crucial idea was that of Louis de Broglie. Since it seemed clear by this date that radiation had a wave aspect as well as a particle aspect, de Broglie made the bold hypothesis that electrons, and other entities until then assumed to be straightforwardly particles, also had a wave-like nature. De Broglie inverted Einstein’s formula for the momentum of a photon, p = h/λ, to produce the famous de Broglie wavelength, λ = h/p. This work comprised de Broglie’s doctoral thesis, and his principal examiner, the very well-known physicist Paul Langevin, while admiring de Broglie’s imagination, was not sure whether the work was significant enough to be acceptable.
