Professional theatre was confined almost entirely to New York City, and there it was in the hands of commercial managers. The key figure in the business of presenting plays on Broadway was not the writer nor the director (and certainly not the actor) but the producer.

It begins with Willy remembering his son waxing the car and proceeds to recollections of other details such as the way in which Biff 'borrowed' a football from the school locker-room. The guilt Willy felt even then about exaggerating his own accomplishments and encouraging his sons to disregard the law is suggested by the appearance of Linda in the memory.
