Strickland’s more recent “post-cyberpunk” Looking Glass last month (see RSF#6 ), I got the itch to revisit some of the classic cyberpunk writers from the Eighties. Post-Cyberpunk tends to have a greater focus on Transhumanism, space travel, and emerging technologies that weren’t imagined at the time of the ’80s. These are the socially bifurcated cities that Sassen has deftly pinned to the specimen board.

Cyberpunk, then, was to be a vanguard literature--a self-styled revolutionary literature, and one its progenitors framed as a total break from the past. William Gibson was born in South Carolina in 1948 and was by most accounts a nerd. Ridley Scott’s original Alien movie (1979) could be seen as akin to Blade Runner. But what saves Snow Crash from being bubblegum and instead makes it a satisfying literary meal is the inescapable sense that Stephenson is not taking himself, the book, or cyberpunk itself, very seriously.

Christian themes aren’t an entirely new development in filmed science fiction, either. This characteristic is particularly evident in steampunk fashion which tends to synthesize punk, goth and rivet styles as filtered through the Victorian era. Bould’s third essay in the series looks at early cyberpunk that does include major black characters, written by black authors. The term ‘cyberpunk’ was improvised to sound cool. It has that quality of being huge and small at the same time—and noble.
