One of the earliest pieces of nanopunk is Linda Nagata's 1995 “Tech Heaven”, a novel that examines the healing promises of nanotechnology whereas more recently Michael Crichton’s novel “Prey” examines a potential doomsday scenario caused by nanotechnology. Before they composed for the glow-stick generation they managed to record some decent minimal wave, including this dry, clinical ode to The Leftorium, from their 1982 self-released debut album.

The Japanese anime cyberpunk film Akira (1988) has a futuristic setting in a crime-ridden Tokyo. Two hundred million years in the future, the sun is about to engulf the Earth, so a spaceship filled with people is sent out towards a likely star in order to save the species. While the literary quality may not be as refined as that you'd find in William Gibson's "Burning Chrome", there are quite a few excellent tales here.
